All of our physicians are board-certified. In order to maintain their certification, they are required to participate in an extensive process that involves completing accredited education and specialty training, and periodic secured computer examinations, to demonstrate competency.
Our medical staff includes the following physicians:
Timothy W. Smith, M.D., FCCP
Dr. Smith is board certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Internal Medicine. He is currently the director of the Intensive Care Unit and the Respiratory Department at St. Joseph Medical Center. He has been with Pulmonary Physicians of Kansas City since we opened our doors in 1994. In 2007, he added a nurse practitioner, Cheryl Daugherty, APN to his staff to assist him in meeting the medical needs of his established patients with chronic illness.
He obtained his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1976, and completed his Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis in 1979. He was a solo-practitioner in Wichita for 10 years prior to moving his family to Kansas City to work at St. Joseph Medical Center.
Dr. Smith is also a husband and proud father of 9 children ranging in age from teens to young adults and plays an active roll in all of their lives. Two of his sons are currently obtaining their medical degree, and a daughter is working on her nursing degree. Dr. Smith also loves the sport of tennis and gets a match in whenever he can.
A. Cosmo Caruso, M.D., FCCP
Dr. Caruso is board certified in Pulmonary Disease, Internal Medicine and Sleep Medicine. He is currently the director of the Sleep Lab and Co-Director of the ICU at St. Joseph Medical Center. He has been with Pulmonary Physicians of Kansas City since 1996.
Dr. Caruso completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, IL in 1988. He then completed a Critical Care fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in 1993, followed by a Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona in 1995. He decided at that point to continue his training with a Sleep Medicine fellowship at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio in 1996.
Dr. Caruso grew up in Kansas City and has lived here most of his life with the exception of his training. He is also a husband and proud father of 4 wonderful children. Dr. Caruso is from a family of physicians. His father Alfred Caruso, M.D. (retired) and brother Peter Caruso, M.D. are OB/GYN specialists in Kansas City.
Patrick J. Perkins, M.D., FCCP
Dr. Perkins joined us in July 2008. He is board certified in Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Perkins grew up in the Kansas City Metro Area and left after obtaining his undergraduate from Rockhurst College in 1990 to pursue his degree in medicine. Dr. Perkins obtained his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1994 and entered the Army. He continued his medical education and obtained his Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care training at Brooke Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He was the director of the ICU at Ft. Sam Houston from 2000-2005. When he left the Army in 2005, he went to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he worked for a large private pulmonary practice. He then came to Kansas City in 2007 and has been in private practice at “home” since then.
Dr. Perkins
is a husband and proud father of 7 children, from pre-school to college.
Jeremy C. Strom, M.D.
Jeremy C. Strom, MD, joined the Pulmonary Physicians of Carondelet in August 2012. Dr. Strom is trained in internal medicine, pediatrics, pulmonary medicine and critical care. He specializes in pulmonology, a branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract, and has a special interest in COPD, cystic fibrosis, asthma, bronchiectasis, lung cancers and neuromuscular diseases affecting the lung as well as pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Strom earned his medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics and his fellowship in pulmonary medicine/critical care medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He also served as internal medicine/pediatrics chief resident. Dr. Strom is a recipient of the University of Kansas Medical Center’s student teacher award as well as the Susan Pingleton Award.
Dr. Strom is a husband and proud father of two sons and a third child on the way.
